Heat Treating Stainless Steels Table Chart Engineers

Stainless steels are heat treated based on the stainless steel type and the target end item requirements. Heat treatment methods, such as stress relieving, hardening and annealing, strengthen the ductility and corrosion resistance properties of the metal that is modified during fabrication, or generate hard structures capable of tolerating abrasion and high mechanical stresses.

Home heat treating small 416 SS part

Dec 09, 2006 · Your post confuses me. First of all, 416 stainless steel is Martensitic, not Ferritic. Also, according to manufacturers data, type 416 stainless steel is easily heat treated at a temperature of 925 1010°C. Possibly you got 416 stainless steel confused with some other 400 series stainless steels.

Problems shop hardening 416 SS, need wisdom

Apr 09, 2007 · The hardening temperature for 416 is 1800F. I cross referenced that to an approximate color (a red orange), held that with a MAPP air torch and the part supported by Inconel wire and oil quenched. (1850F), and stainless foil. Have not tried that approach, mostly because it is a 2 3 hour project to get the small furnace up to temp.
